Prospective Traveler?

I guess this is my post to the students and faculty who have gone through this: Is it hard to be away from family over the holidays? What have you guys done to either compensate or has it not even been a big deal because you don't have the hype of Thanksgiving between Halloween and Christmas? Just wondering since if I was to go abroad, it looks like it would be in the fall, and that is one of the problems I am trying to figure out.

Hope to heard your input!

Amadea,
It's kind of hard to sum up. Thanks to wonderful things like Skype, you can talk to relatives over the Internet, even via video-phone. The past experiences I've had is that you will bond with the people in your group, and they will become sort of a default family. I've had two thanksgivings like this now (three, if you count this October's Canadian Thanksgiving too), and while you do miss your family, the closeness of friends makes up for it, at least well enough to banish the distance from real family.
Hope this helps,
Ray
